Cole checked all statements on the controversy before the protests in Damascus and Beirut and found that “neither the CIA, nor BBC Monitoring, nor any of the wire services noticed any Syrian official saying anything at all about this.
“It is being alleged that the Baath regime was behind the burning of the Danish embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus, on the grounds that it could not have happened unless the police state allowed it.
“But things have got out of hand before in Syria, sometimes on a large scale.
“It is likely that the regime allowed the initial demonstration, which radical Sunni Muslims took advantage of to torch the embassy.
“The Syrian regime hates radical Islam and doesn’t like disorder either. We cannot assume that the embassy burning was directed by the Syrian state. Rice and Bush have decided to get Syria, and are using the current crisis as a stick with which to beat it, and are lying shamelessly.”
Cole says that Iran had been trying to cool tempers:
“Its embassy was active in Copenhagen pushing for an apology in the autumn of 2005, but I can’t find evidence of inflammatory statements until the past week.
“Some Iranian officials have called for calm on the issue, rather than inciting it.
“Despite wild charges that the Iranian protege Hizbollah [a Shia group] was behind the Beirut embassy burning, in fact the demonstration was a Sunni demonstration. The Shia don’t seem to have been part of it.
“You can only imagine the memo from [Bush’s chief political strategist] Karl Rove – ‘Anything happens in the Middle East, blame it on Syria and Iran. Works every time’.”
The political motivation for a collaborative effort comes from the potential destabilizing nature of the space elevator. The space elevator clearly has military applications, but more critically it would give a strong economic advantage for the controlling entity. Information flowing through satellites, future energy from space, planets full of real estate and associated minerals, and basic military advantage could all potentially be controlled by the entity that controls access to space through the space elevator. An international collaboration could result in multiple elevators at various locations around the globe, since subsequent elevators would be significantly cheaper, thus allowing general access to space and consequently eliminating the instabilities a single system might cause.

CIUDAD DEL VATICANO (AP) - El papa Benedicto XVI pidió hoy que "Cuba se abra al mundo y el mundo se abra a Cuba".
En una carta enviada al cardenal Jaime Lucas Ortega y Alamino, arzobispo de San Cristóbal de La Habana, el pontífice retomó el auspicio planteado por su predecesor, Juan Pablo II.
"Una apertura que exige examinar antes de nada cómo abrir el corazón y la mente a las cosas de Dios, como abrirse recíprocamente entre aquellos que conviven, creyendo y confiando los unos con los otros, aunque sean diferentes los modos de pensar y creer", expresó.
Además, dijo, "cómo abrirse al ámbito mundial, con los desafíos de sus posibilidades y al mismo tiempo de sus dificultades".
El pontífice invitó a los obispos cubanos a descubrir en la experiencia "las señales de Dios vivo que camina con ustedes ... Dios que camina con todos aquellos que viven en esta tierra, creyentes y no creyentes, cercanos y lejanos, porque todos están invitados a la fiesta de la vida que el Padre nos da", concluyó.
El Papa envió la carta en ocasión del vigésimo aniversario del encuentro Nacional Eucarístico Cubano.
LA PAZ, Bolivia (Reuters) - Bolivia's foreign minister says coca leaves, the raw material for cocaine, are so nutritious they should be included on school breakfast menus. "Coca has more calcium than milk. It should be part of the school breakfast," Foreign Minister David Choquehuanca was quoted as saying in Friday's edition of La Razon. The new leftist government of Evo Morales, Bolivia's first indigenous president, has vowed to promote the legal uses of coca, the plant used to make cocaine, which is revered in Andean culture and is commonly chewed or made into tea. Morales, himself a former coca farmer, has pledged to fight the drugs trade but at the same time protect the cultivation of coca in Bolivia -- the world's third-biggest cocaine producer after Colombia and Peru. A coca leaf weighing 100 grams contains 18.9 calories of protein, 45.8 mg of iron, 1540 mg of calcium and vitamins A, B1, B2, E and C, which is more than most nuts, according to a 1975 study by a group of Harvard University professors.

"People are often confused by the ideas of recombination and digitality. The former typically connotes scientific esoterica pertinent to molecular biology, while the latter is associated with information and communication technology. Indeed, these associations are correct, but very reductive. Recombination and digitality are not so specialized. As we shall see, they are the foundation of a new cosmology —a new way of understanding, ordering, valuing, and performing in the world. While some cultural vectors have been faster to embrace digital models than others, no area remains untouched. Theater, like all of the fine arts, is now in the process of constructing a relationship with this new paradigm, and this is at times a very embittered struggle. The elder model of the analogic, deeply embedded in cultural institutions, is not voluntarily sharing any territory.
Much more is at stake than the configuration and appearance of theater in the next century; the formation of digital theater (in the widest sense of this term) is a struggle over the micro-sociology of the performative matrix of everyday life. The digital model, like the analogic, contains both apocalypse and utopia, and the applications constructed now will in part determine the directions in which digital processes will later flow. Capitalism is primarily a digital political-economy, much as the medieval economy was primarily analogic. Pancapitalism’s use of the digital thus far has been horrifying, whether one considers the pathological separation and alienation of Taylorist production, the false democracy of consumption, the repressive apparatus of surveillance, or the biotechnologies of eugenics. Digital culture is on this same trajectory, with its primary manifestation being an invasive mass media that functions as a re-production and distribution network for the ideology of capital.
