problem is that you cannot criminalize a tendency.
I'm not totally against the registry but I do see its flaws.
While i think that the punishment for sex offenders should be castration (lets see who will perform these acts knowing that their precious member will get cut off), i became intrigued with the mug shots...all of them fit the stereotypical view of what a sex offender should look like...For example, in my area, Benjamin Martinez tried to rape a 6 yr old girl, Gennaro Pacifico managed to rape a girl (albeit a 3rd degree rape) and young Crespin Mejia sodomized a 9 yr old girl. Almost all were minorities, and if white, un-atractive and socially akward...hmm...aren't these the type of people that are marginalized, deemened undesireable by society?
Then they commit the crime, serve jail time and then anyone can go to their house and give them a good paliza. And our children are protected.
Who knows, maybe it is all a result of the sex offenders' genetic make up.
So as of now, with my limited study of the sociological, biological and historical data regarding sex offenders, i believe castration should be the option; otherwise, social norms will have to change, genetic manipulation resolved and perhaps history should be taught properly at schools.
At least i think these are some of the issues that need to be studied before assuming that surveillance will resolve the problem...

mi uso de la palabra "castration" no es un relajo, es parte integral del escrito. estoy diciendo (infiriendo, y no muy claramente basada en tu reaccion) que quitarle el miembro a alguien o crear un website que indique donde se encuentran los "sex offenders" son un parcho al problema. Y que antes de decidir si es apropriado o no el uso del website, hay otros factores mas importantes que se deberian estudiar.

i agree with your point and orlando's, which i think are pretty obvious points regarding sexual offense [not sarc]. Even obvious to women who say "lo que tu digas papi" [sarc].
