La Red Puertorriqueña hacia el Foro Social Mundial
The Red Puertorriqueña hacia el Foro Social Mundial (La Red—“The Network”) was born in San Juan in October 2004. It is made up of organizations, groups, and individuals of Puerto Rican civil society that oppose neoliberal globalization. Its goals are: to organize the participation of Puarto Rican delegates at the World Social Forum (WSF), the Social Forum of the Americas (SFA) and the Caribbean Social Forum (CSF); to share our experiences with the public at large; to initiate and organize the Puerto Rico Social Forum; and to host and participate in events aimed at creating spaces for dialogue and democratic debate on possible alternatives to neoliberal globalization.

Identity
La Red is itself an open, democratic space, independent of traditional political parties, representatives of the state, and multinational corporations. The only requirement to join La Red is to support the values outlined in the WSF Charter of Principles. Members of La Red, whether individuals or organizations, maintain their respective identities and agendas at all times.

The WSF Charter of Principles is available at:
http://www.forumsocialmundial.org.br/main.php?id_menu=4&cd_language=2

La Red is characterized by its plurality and its inclusion of minority and marginalized groups. It is also non-governmental and non-partisan. It seeks to facilitate the building of social movement networks in the hope of transforming Puerto Rican society. However, La Red does not presume nor aspire to represent Puerto Rican civil society as a whole.

Activities and Events
For the fifth WSF, held in Port Alegre, Brazil, in 2005, La Red organized a panel on Puerto Rico’s colonial situation from the perspective of its diverse social movements, a roundtable discussion on social movements in Puerto Rico, a workshop on the ongoing struggle of Vieques, and a seminar on the relationship between public universities and communities in struggle. La Red’s delegation to the sixth WSF, held earlier this year in Caracas, Venezuela, organized a workshop on Puerto Rico’s Teachers’ Federation, and a broad panel on resistance and alternatives in Puerto Rico. Individual members of La Red also participated in activities organized by other organizations. La Red has organized numerous events throughout the island to share the experience of the WSF, discuss community problems, and promote the Puerto Rico Social Forum.

Why does Puerto Rico need a Forum?
Puerto Rican communities, on the island or in the diaspora, urgently need solutions to the problems we share: inequality, violence, marginalization, criminalization, poverty, inadequate services, unemployment, among others. Obsolete ways of facing these problems, manipulation by politicians, and infighting amongst those who seek social change have led to generalized frustration in Puerto Rican society. Grassroots movements and efforts that seek genuine alternatives lack spaces in which to interact freely and exchange much-needed information top advance their goals. The voices of common citizens who express their disenchantment and desire for improvement, drowned by the corporate media’s barrage of invitations to consume and conform, never find their way onto the agendas of those who make decisions in their names. The Puerto Rico Social Forum is a response to the lack of collective dialogue among citizens and among activists.

Self-Managed Activities
Through their own self-managed initiative, Forum participants will propose and organize workshops (single-speaker, single-issue), panels (multiple speakers, one or more issues), roundtable discussions, and artistic and cultural events, on any

Building a New York City Delegation
In order to stimulate and facilitate the participation of the Puerto Rican diaspora, Steering Committees are taking shape in Puerto Rican communities accross the U.S. Among other things, the Steering Committee will raise funds to help cover the cost of travel for delegates, help find housing options, and help register delegates and activities. The first meeting of the New York City Steering Committee will be held:
