Hypatia of Alexandria
Hypatia came to symbolise learning and science which the early Christians identified with paganism. T L Heath, in A History of Greek Mathematics (2 Vols.) (Oxford, 1921), writes "... by her eloquence and authority ... attained such influence that Christianity considered itself threatened ..." This wide popularity led to Hypatia becoming the focal point of riots between Christians and non-Christians. As a result of Christian leaders who felt threatened by her scholarship, learning, and depth of scientific knowledge, in March of the year 415, a Christian mob dragged her off of her chariot and scraped the flesh from her body while she was still alive.
