A Gabriel García Márquez lo conocí en una librería de Cuba en el 1979. Tan pronto entré por la puerta lo vi al fondo, curioseando en el anaquel de novelas de caballerías. Mi primer impulso fue acercarme a saludarlo, pero en esa época yo no sabía hablar con gente famosa. Además, recordé una anécdota del propio García Márquez: cuando joven observó a Julio Cortázar en un café de París, pero no se atrevió a hablarle. También recordé haber leído que a García Márquez le gustaba Cuba porque caminaba por las calles sin que le pidieran autógrafos ni lo molestaran. Por tanto, observé durante unos minutos el famoso bigote, el pelo rizado, la guayabera... y me di por satisfecho. Me fui a curiosear al anaquel de novelas francesas. Transcurrió más de una hora. Feliz porque había encontrado novelas de Hugo y Daudet, le pregunté al cajero dónde estaban las novelas egipcias. García Márquez se volteó de pronto y me miró fijamente, sin disimulo. -¿Autor? -preguntó el cajero. -¿Tienes la novela ‘El espejismo’, de Mahfuz? -contesté. Al escucharme por segunda vez, García Márquez, con cuatro novelas de caballerías en las manos, vino hacia mí y me preguntó: -¿Tu acento es puertorriqueño? -Sí. -Ah, qué suerte. ¿Tienes unos minutos? -Claro -contesté. -Tu país me apabulla -dijo García Márquez irritado, en voz baja-. ¿Sabes quién soy? -Por supuesto, ‘Cien años de soledad’ me gustó bastante. -Gracias -dijo-, pero ése es el problema. Quiero asombrar a los lectores, dejarlos con la boca abierta. ¿Entiendes? He tenido cierto éxito. Los críticos le han puesto nombre a lo que hago: realismo mágico. Pero ustedes me dejan pequeño...

Every show begins with a brief summary of the featurettes, commented in German, which is then repeated, this time commented in a foreign language, followed by a comment like "Das war Schwedisch." ("This was Swedish.")..."
